* Cory's Story

Letter to the Editor, Mammoth Times
October 11, 2002

Last night we met our neighbor, Cory O'Connor, who was out last night at the right time and the right place and did the right thing. We had just put our grandchildren to bed and were finishing up the office work for the day. It was another quiet night in Mammoth Lakes. Then we noticed flashing lights, looked out the window and there were six fire trucks and about 30 fire fighters and lots of activity!

This was very close! So we went downstairs to investigate. Smoke was coming out of our little cabin. Our cabin was on fire!! You can imagine the thoughts that were racing through our heads: "There's a gas stove !", "Thank God no one is in there!", "This fire fighting is a dangerous job!", "Hope no one gets injured", "How can this be happening?".

Cory, had been walking on our street, heard the smoke detector beeping, ran home and got his cell phone; called 911 and came back to the place where the alarm was sounding. He felt the door handle to check the temperature, and was ready to break down the door if he had to, when the firefighters arrived.

Cory was observant and caring, two qualities of a good neighbor and humble, a quality of a good person. He just did the right thing. He averted a potential disaster. We've already thought about all the "what ifs." And last night we met our neighbor and a hero.

Thank you Cory, and thank you Mammoth Lakes' fire fighters for your quick response, and calm, organized manner of saving our cabin without injury or damage.

Gratefully,
Marta Smith and Keith Hofer

P.S. The cause? An in-door/out-door carpet blocking the floor heater.
